Polish superstar Tomasz Gollob admits Copenhagen has a special place in his heart after storming back to the World Championship summit in the Danish capital on Saturday night. Gollob claimed victory in the FIM Dansk Metal Danish Speedway Grand Prix in the PARKEN Stadium. The defending world champion produced the mother of all first turns in the final to shoot around his closest title rival Greg Hancock coming out of turn two, before pulling into the distance. Three-time world No.1 Jason Crump was second after rocketing around compatriot Chris Holder on the last bend. Hancock had to make do with fourth, but he is just point behind Gollob at the top of the overall standings. Gollob, who has now reached five consecutive finals in PARKEN and claimed two gold medals, one silver and a bronze, admits Copenhagen is one of his top tracks on the Grand Prix circuit. The 40-year-old said: “I love racing in Copenhagen. Last year I got second place and tonight it’s first. This track is one of the best for me ? Gorzow and Copenhagen are my favourites. “It was a good day for me. I raced two new engines and they worked. I have to say thank you to my team and my mechanic Jan for doing some good work in the last week. “I’m very happy to win and that’s 20 points I scored. Now I’ve got first place overall.” Now Gollob is determined to register his first ever SGP victory on British shale in the FIM Doodson British Grand Prix in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on June 25. He was only denied a final berth when he suffered ignition problems in the semi last year, and he is determined to put that right in two weeks. The 40-year-old said: “Next it’s Cardiff. I had a good meeting there last year, but I won’t be using the same engine at this one. “I think it will be a good meeting. I don’t know. But I’ll be putting much work in during the next two weeks and I’ll be testing new engines. Then maybe we will get a good result in Cardiff.” Gollob, who started from gate two in the final, made a magnificent burst around the fence on turn two to shoot his way into first place and leave Crump, Holder and Hancock to scrap over silver and bronze. While the Bydgoszcz-born bullet is no stranger to throwing caution to the wind, he admits he had little room to pull off his magic move. He said: “Greggy, Holder and Crumpie were all there in the first corner and it was very tight. “My start was perfect from the second gate. I went around the outside. It wasn’t the best way for me. There was only two metres between the riders and the fence, but I got there.” Gollob now has 61 World Championship points, while Hancock is breathing down his neck on 60. Polish international Jaroslaw Hampel is their nearest rival on 48. But the Gorzow and Hammarby hero has no intention of taking his lofty position for granted with seven rounds remaining. He said: “This is the fourth Grand Prix and there are seven more. It will change at the top.” Meanwhile, British star Chris Harris enjoyed his best round of the season so far, scoring seven points and scraping into the semi-final. But he was unable to make an impact against Hancock, Crump and Freddie Lindgren in the battle for the final places. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS (after four rounds of 11): 1 Tomasz Gollob 61, 2 Greg Hancock 60, 3 Jaroslaw Hampel 48, 4 Jason Crump 42, 5 Chris Holder 42, 6 Nicki Pedersen 37, 7 Freddie Lindgren 35, 8 Emil Sayfutdinov 35, 9 Kenneth Bjerre 27, 10 Andreas Jonsson 26, 11 Rune Holta 23, 12 Chris Harris 21, 13 Antonio Lindback 21, 14 Janusz Kolodziej 21, 15 Artem Laguta 10, 16 Thomas H Jonasson 8, 17 Damian Balinski 4, 18 Matej Kus 3, 19 Mikkel B Jensen 2, 20 Simon Gustafsson 1.
