Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki scores first MX1 podium at Nanaimo

Kamloops, BC(June 13, 2011) After a three year hiatus, the Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals made a return to Nanaimo, British Columbia’s Wastelands MX track on scenic Vancouver Island and the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki team was looking to build on their momentum from the opening round the weekend before in Kamloops.

The high speed, hilly track was well known to Teddy Maier from his time in the MX2 class and he used the knowledge to top the MX1 leaderboard during qualifying. His fellow KX450F mounted teammate, Matt Goerke qualified in the number six position. Meanwhile in MX2, it was another Leading Edge bike at the top of the field as Tyler Sjoberg qualified number one with Austin Politelli and Spencer Knowles logging the 5thand 6thquickest lap times, respectively.

It was Knowles flying the team flag early in the first moto as he battled with Kaven Benoit for the lead. He rode steady to finish a solid fourth while his teammate Tyler Sjoberg was working his way through the field and closed right up on Benoit with a lap remaining but couldn’t make a pass stick. Unfortunately, Sjoberg was docked 10 positions for an apparent flag violation and was only credited with a 12th. Not to be deterred, he came back for moto two and logged another second place finish and fifth overall on the day. Despite the misfortune he remains very much in the title hunt with seven rounds remaining. Keeping the team on the podium, Austin Politelli grabbed third overall on the strength of 5-4 moto scores for his first trip to the box in the Canadian series. Just behind him in fourth overall was Spencer Knowles for his best ever finish. Politelli was stoked on his first podium, ?I thought the track was really fun, though getting hit with the roost sure wasn’t. I’m definitely happy with how my day went.?

In MX1 it was Maier’s time to shine and the 2009 MX2 champion didn’t disappoint, grabbing a strong third in the first moto for his second trip to the podium of the series. For moto two he grabbed the early lead and held on for half of the moto before eventually grabbing another third place and third overall on the day for his first overall podium finish since making the move to the premier MX1 class. Said Maier, ?I’m a little disappointed in my day. I really thought I had it in me to win but I’ll take third place. The track was really good compared to the last time I was here and my bike was working great so I’ll work hard this week and get them next weekend.?

Matt Goerke was another week further along in his recovery from his broken wrist and was starting to look more and more like a contender. He rode to a solid seventh in the first moto but tangled with a lapper in moto two and clawed his way back to thirteenth by moto’s end. He looked stronger than his results showed and will no doubt be a factor next weekend. Also showing strong form was Leading Edge support rider, Brock Hoyer, who grabbed the first MX1 moto holeshot before crashing and charging back to a solid 11th. He then crashed in the first turn of moto two before putting in an inspiring charge, coming all the way back from last to 9thin a great ride.
