Spoiler Alert: 2011 Silverstone MotoGP results below.

The conditions for Sunday’s MotoGP round in Silvestone were very similar to Jerez – extremely slippery due to rain.

But the results were not even close to Jerez round.

The UK race was won by the man who doiminated all three practice sessions and secured the pole – Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner.

The Australian’s victory was his fourth in the 2011 MotoGP Championship, and 27th overall. Stoner was joined on the podium by his teammate Andrea Dovizioso and Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards, who braved the MotoGP race with a broken collarbone.

With rain falling, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo took the early lead at Silvestone, followed by a trio of Honda MotoGP prototypes: Dovizioso, Stoner and San Carlo Hona Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli.

But unlike the 2010 MotoGP Champion, Lorenzo made a mistake on the first lap, giving the lead to Dovizioso and Stoner. Simoncelli then passed Lorenzo, taking third.

On lap 2, Stoner robbed the lead from his teammate Dovi, and began his typical 2011 domination on the Honda RC212V, eventually lapping Mapfre Aspar Ducati’s Hector Barbera and Pramac Racing’s Randy de Puniet with three laps remaining.

The battle was for second, as Simoncelli caught up to Dovizioso, but an wide, losing third to Lorenzo. But Lorenzo would high-side the Yamaha M1 on the eighth lap, creating his first DNF of the year, and first since 2009.

Simoncelli would take back third, but while chasing down the Repsol boys up front, he lost his front on the RC212V on lap 10, crashing.

This would allow the suprise podium finish by the Texas Tornado Colin Edwards. The Texan, who started from eighth on the grid, raced smooth and consistent en route to his first podium of the season.

There would be one more crash in the race; on lap 14, Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies would take a spill on his M1.

Rounding out the top five were Nicky Hayden on the Ducati Team GP11 and Alvaro Bautista, the sole Suzuki rider on the Rizla GSV-R.

Nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi would take sixth, just ahead of the rookie Karel Abraham on the Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati. Toni Elias took eighth on the LCR Honda, with Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) in ninth, and Loris Capirossi (Pramac Racing) in 10th.

The MotoGP grid began with only 15 riders at Silverstone due to the absence of Dani Pedrosa (broken collarbone at Le Mans) and home favorite Cal Crutchlow, who also broke his collarbone during a wreck in qualifying.

With his victory, Casey Stoner now leads the MotoGP Championship with 116 points, 18 ahead of Lorenzo. Dovizioso is in third with 83, and Rossi is in fourth with 68.
