Tech3 Moto2 rider Bradley Smith took third place in today’s wet race at the Assen MotoGP round after a 24-lap dice with Kenan Sofuoglu and eventual winner Marc Marquez but it was disaster for Scott Redding who was lapped and finished in 24th.
Smith, who is now fourth in the title chase, got a terrific start and managed to go from tenth to second on the first lap, settling in behind leader Simoni Corsi, with Marquez and Sofuoglu in close attendance, before getting duffed up a little and going back to the back of the lead pack which also included Yuki Takahashi and Mike Di Meglio.
After a handful of laps, Smith worked his way back to second and passed Corsi for the lead which they then swapped three times in as many corners as Di Meglio, who is Smith’s team-mate lobbed it, while Sofuoglu and Marquez battled for third.
The Turkish rider pinched the lead from Smith after five laps and they exchanged overtakes before Marquez demoted the Briton to second with 11 laps to go. Marquez then took the lead from the Tecnomag rider but Smith was having none of it, going back to second and then re-taking the lead.
Marquez then went back to the front and Sofuoglu followed him through but then ran wide and dropped to fourth as Takahashi also took advantage. The Japanese rider then slid underneath Smith for second at the unpronounceable chicane before crashing out with five laps to go.
Sofuoglu secured second with four laps to go and that is how they took the chequered flag. Championship leader Stefan Bradl crashed at the last chicane with only three laps to go but remains at the top of the table.
