The weather has been certainly been throwing a curve ball at us here the past two weekends in the 2011 CMRC Canadian Motocross national season and it was another wild one here yesterday as the series stopped in Southern Manitoba at Morden’s Shadow Valley Raceway. Conditions were actually sunny and dry, for the most part, on Saturday but a huge thunderstorm rolled in Saturday night, damaging tents and flooding the track with a deluge of water. Despite not raining much on Sunday itself, the track was in quite bad condition and the riders were faced with a mud race akin to the 2007 edition that is still talked about.
The muddy conditions are always good for a shakeup of the leaderboard and it was no exception at Morden, though we still had the same overall winners at the end of the day. In MX1 we did see an end to Colton Facciotti‘s perfect moto win streak as his teammate and defending champion, Dusty Klatt, put in a mud riding clinic to take the first moto win.
Check out all the action from a mucky day in Morden…
After a solid day of sunshine on Saturday, a thunderstorm rolled in at night, reeking havoc on the pits and flooding the track.
The heavy winds managed to lift the Factory KTM team’s awning and flip it right over their truck. Luckily no one was hurt.
The next day dawned sunny and clear but the track was drowned under all the rain from the night before.
KTM was forced to improvise with some eze ups to replace their damaged awning.
Confused clothing rolled out these foam hands to promote their rider, Kevin Urquhart.
Blackfoot Yamaha found a new pit mascot when they came to work in the morning.
Matt Lee worked hard to scrape the top layer of muck off the track before practice.
Billy Laninovich was at Morden to work with Alberta’s Kat Shipley.
Denny Dennis is stoked on the muddy conditions.
Kaven Benoit(15) grabs the first MX2 moto holeshot.
Benoit rode strong in the slop to grab second overall with 2-3 moto scores.
Idaho’s Morgan Burger also rode well in the mud, grabbing fourth overall.
The youngest of the Allison brothers, Bryton, had his best ride yet in his young career, grabbing 9th in the first moto.
Jeremy Medaglia remained consistent as ever at Morden, grabbing the final spot on the podium with 3-4 scores.
After borrowing a bike and racing on Saturday, Doug DeHaan grabbed the wrenches and helped out Topher Ingalls on Sunday.
With the muddy conditions there were blown bikes everywhere. Tyler Sjoberg was one of the unlucky ones who didn’t finish the race.
Things didn’t fare much better for his teammate, Austin Politelli, either in moto one. While running in second he two suffered a DNF.
Kevin Lepp had a breakout ride at Morden, grabing his first top 5 with 7-7 moto scores for 5th overall.
Not sure who this is but this shot pretty much summed up a lot of the riders on the day.
Parker Hoppe was another rider with a strong showing in the mud. He grabbed 5th in the first moto.
Nicky Beatty also had a great ride, grabbing 6th overall with 8-9 finishes.
Ken Thiessen pushes Eric Jeffery’s bike off the track.
Austin Politelli rebounded from his first moto DNF to work his way into second in moto two and even catch Tyler Medaglia for a bit but Medaglia was able to pull his lead back out.
No matter what the conditions, Tyler Medaglia just keeps winning. He put in a dominant 1-1 showing at Morden.
Todd Sewell enjoys the muddy conditions.
Your MX2 podium: Benoit, Tyler Medaglia and Jeremy Medaglia.
Benoit was so happy to get second overall he threw his jersey to the crowd.
Kyle Ward’s bike was so stuck that even the bobcat was getting stuck trying to pull it out. They ended up having to dig all the way around and managed to get it out halfway through the MX1 moto.
Jared Allison(16) grabbed the first MX1 moto holeshot.
Shadow Valley owner, Jeremy Hoeppner, extricates another bike.
Dusty Klatt was so dominant in moto one that despite this crash he still took the first moto win and lapped all the way to fourth.
Klatt gets his first moto win of the season and ends Facciotti’s unbeaten streak.
Kevin Urquhart came through to get third in the first moto.
It started to rain a bit before the second moto so the Monster girls found a new use for the 30-second board.
Shawn Maffenbeier kept the Yamalube holeshot streak alive by taking the second moto start.
Colton Facciotti made quick work of Maffenbeier and stretched out his lead.
Kyle Keast finished third overall with consistent 4-4 scores.
Jay Burke had a great second moto, grabbing 5th.
Matt Goerke did not have a good day. He DNF’d both motos.
Michael Willard got his first moto podium of the season when he rode to a strong third in the final moto of the day on the KTM 350.
PJ Stratton had his best finish in the MX1 class when he grabbed 8th in moto two.
Though Klatt caught up to him late in the race, Facciotti was able to stretch his lead back out and take the win and remains unbeaten in overall wins this season.
What a heartbreaker of a day for Shawn Maffenbeier. After running comfortably in 3rd for much of the second moto he made a couple mistakes and eventually ended up stuff off the side of the track so bad he couldn’t even get himself out.
Klatt was not impressed with the second moto conditions.
Klatt shows Facciotti how it felt to ride with his helmet weighed down with mud.
The dirt at Morden is worse than glue when wet.
Eventually Shawn Maffenbeier was able to get pulled out of the mud and claim his holeshot cheque.
Unfortunately only one of his boots made the journey.
Your MX1 podium: Klatt, Facciotti and Keast.
