In Australia, Tony Hannagan of BevelTech is the man to call if you need help with a classic Ducati. And this sleek black-and-red beauty is his latest build. ‘Vern R‘ is a Ducati 900SS-based racer designed for the BEARS series—meaning “British, European, American Racing and Supporters”, a club set up by the late, great John Britten. Hannagan has taken the frame and motor from one of his heavily modified road bikes, and developed the machine for the track using the time-honoured principle of adding lightness. Dry weight, as seen here, is a trifling 290 lbs (132kg).

To keep running costs to a minimum, Hannagan limited his engine tuning mods. He’s fitted Imola cams, cleaned up the ports and installed higher compression Cosworth pistons. He trimmed the engine weight by using magnesium rocker covers (from Norway, of all places), removing the alternator and narrowing the engine cover, and fitting a roundcase motor clutch cover. The heavily cut down gear selector case and fork brace were brought out from under a bench, where they had been hiding since Tony last built racing bevels back in the 1980s.

The 860 frame has been modified to the same geometry as a 916, with the motor rotated back 8mm. The twin shocks (required by racing regulations) are mounted with the same geometry as Barry Sheene’s RG500. To reduce weight even more, Hannagan has fitted titanium fasteners wherever possible and removed every bit of unnecessary metal—even halving the number of mudguard mounts on the forks.

The bike is still being tested, so the exhausts are unmuffled for now. I bet this one sounds as good as it looks.

Radical Ducati is in the business of making good sportbikes great. The Spanish company produces top-drawer accessories and go-faster kits for most of the Ducati range, and the RAD 02 Corsa Evo is its latest release. The ‘02’ moniker means that it’s configured as a race or trackday bike. You can buy the bike complete, or as a kit. Either way, you’ll get a custom 4.2 kg aluminum frame, subframe and swingarm, plus assorted structural parts and the bodywork. To that you’ll need to add an engine, which in the case of the Corsa Evo is an 1100 unit. Updates from the original Corsa include a one-piece seat and tail unit to save weight, a lighter rear subframe and a redesigned front fairing. And if you think the RAD 02 looks too good to save for the track, you can get homologated parts such as taillights that allow the machine to be ridden on the road. Hermoso! 2008 Ducati 1098R First Ride

After much anticipation, the 2008 Ducati 1098R has finally arrived and after a day of pounding out laps on the machine that is supposed to swing the World Superbike balance of power back to the Italians, we came away impressed.

When the 1098 debuted back in 2006, Ducati was optimistic about the bike's potential. Much to the dismay of superbike fans it didn't make an appearance in the premier racing series' that year, though it ultimately turned out to be a huge sales success, with dealerships cleaned-out from coast to coast. Soon, the buzz of the impending arrival of a 1098R was the hot topic. While the rumor mill was churning, the company flexed its muscle and initiated a rule change in World Superbike which would allow 1200cc Twins to compete alongside the 1000cc In-Line Fours in an effort to reduce the cost of participation. By employing the old adage, "there's no replacement for displacement" to its benefit, Ducati would now be able to use this 'advantage' en lieu of costly performance tuning to keep Twins competitive. The door had been opened to allow Ducati to supersize the 1098 and turn it into the machine it hopes will return them to a position of dominance.

Although the 1098R looks similar to the standard bike, this is a pure homologation special with nearly everything it takes to compete at the highest level of racing right out of the box. Leading the long list of high-tech racing components is a bigger, badder 1198cc version of the Evoluzione Testastretta motor which is managed by a fully-functional traction-control system and wrapped in some seriously good looking bodywork. The lower belly pan, side panels, seat assembly and front fender are made of carbon fiber with all but the fender left unpainted so as to contrast with its racing red paint. It's easy to see that the bike looks the part of a no-holds barred racer but the question is whether or not it has the juice to back it up.

A handful of the world's moto-press had the opportunity to sample the 1098R at Jerez in January, but the rest of us had to wait a month for our chance to ride Italy's finest at the 16-turn Barber Motorsports road course in Birmingham, Alabama. Our troupe of journalists was joined by 1993 World Superbike Champion Scott Russell, who was there to show us the fast way around the 2.38-mile track, along with a massive supporting cast from Ducati North America and Pirelli. Once the tire warmers had the super-sticky Diablo Supercorsa SC2 buns up to temp, we got our first taste of the 1098R.

Climb aboard this Ducati and it feels exactly like, well, a 1098. It's thin through the middle and sharp edged with an aggressive riding position that is ideal for riding fast on a track. Thumb the starter and it comes to life with a symphony of sounds, starting with its dry clutch rattling and that wonderful Ducati Twin pulsing out of the dual Termignoni underseat exhaust. Click the 6-speed tranny into first then drag the clutch to compensate for its tall first gear and soon the party is underway. Both clutch and shifting action are smooth and precise. Crack the throttle open on the high performance L-Twin and it accelerates as hard or harder, than any of the open class superbikes we've tested. It comes on with authority, making power rapidly while its ever-present exhaust note rewards the rider with a wonderful mechanical melody. It's easily one of the most exciting motorcycles I've ever ridden.

Carving up corners on a bike like this is a real treat. It does retain the basic handling characteristics of its 1098 sibling, requiring a bit of effort to get it to turn-in initially, as compared to the Big Four's bikes which tend to be more flickable right off the lot. The forged, 'racing gold' colored Marchesini wheels quicken the steering versus the standard 1098 and are one of the few pieces of hardware that distinguish it from the base model or S other than the trademark white front and side number plates. Once you get the 1098R tipped-in and roll it through any apex, the fun really begins. Whether squaring off sharp turns or carving through sweepers, the 1098R is as stable as they come. Whatever the secret recipe Ducati applies to its sportbikes handling characteristics, it's nice to know they continue to return to the well for this bike. As I make the transition from the edge of traction at full lean and dial on some throttle a moment before getting onto the meat of the tire, the much-lauded traction control system comes into play.

The Ducati Traction Control (DTC) is no cheap substitute. It is the very same system utilized on both Casey Stoner's title-winning Desmosedici and the Ducati Corse World Superbikes. It features eight entirely different 'profiles,' which may be adjusted from the on-board computer on the LCD dash. All the available data offered by the Ducati Data Analyzer (DDA) and the selection of settings is managed through a handlebar-mounted toggles switch on the left bar. Ducati techs had the DTC set to profile four during the first half of the day. The ignition cut-out on this setting is not overly abrupt, allowing the rider to feel the system actually work without dramatic intervention on every input. We turned it down to profile two after lunch and the difference was quite noticeable. The bike would step out further during acceleration before it would kick in on level two versus level four, revealing just how hairy things could get on this beast if the DTC was not in place. Each setting is designed to provide a progressively more intricate profile as the rider learns to take advantage of the system over time. Think of it as levels in a video game. As you learn to get the most out of one level, you move to the next and if all goes as planned the rider will learn how to use the DTC to his/her advantage. Interestingly, the level eight profile was developed by test rider Vittoriano Guareschi specifically for professional riders aiming to get the most out of the DTC experience. For us mortals, the middle-of-the-road setting proved to be a useful selection that shows what the DTC is capable of without overwhelming virgin 1098R riders like us.

When the traction control interferes it feels like you are hitting the rev-limiter. It isn't as intrusive as one might expect on lower settings, but it did take a bit of getting used to as I've never ridden a bike with this type of sophisticated electronics. Most of the time it came into play while driving out of tighter turns because the speeds were low and the bike was on a small contact patch, or while dialing in a bit too much throttle while on the deck through Barber's ultra-fast bends. Those conditions could be a recipe for a high-side but the DTC takes that out of the equation and leaves the rider to concentrate on getting a good drive, proper braking and choosing a good line - all key to turning a decent lap. And all of this takes place within a nanosecond inside the DTC. It uses wheel sensors to track wheel-spin before using the same software algorithm used by Ducati Corse to instantaneously alter ignition timing to restore traction.

Another bit of previously unattainable racing technology is the Ohlins TTX36 shock. This component can easily go unnoticed, but in the case of the Ducati 1098R it's a big deal considering how much effort was spent explaining the shock's goodness to us. The TT designation refers to the Twin Tubes piggy-backed to the shock body. Each of these tubes houses the pistons and shim stacks that control rebound and compression damping. Any suspension tuner will confirm that tuning standard suspension is a matter of compromise because any change in one area affects the other when searching for the perfect set-up. The TTX36 is Ohlins' answer to this age old problem as it works to keep rebound and compression separated from one another. I'm not too finicky about bike set-up and the baseline settings provided to us worked great. Up front the 43mm Ohlins fork, with titanium nitride-coated sliders, is equally adept at keeping the 1098R rider protected from track imperfections.

As great as the Ohlins suspension package is and as high-tech as the DDA and DTC are, they won't get much attention if the hot-rodded Evoluzione engine isn't up to par. Fortunately, it is. When Ducati lobbied for changes to the World Superbike rules which would allow for increased displacement in two-cylinder machines, it created quite the uproar. So much so that long-time Suzuki sponsor Corona threatened to pull out of the series if the FIM conformed to their demands. Despite the resistance, Ducati got their wish and capacity for Twins has been increased from 1000cc to 1200cc and voila, the 1098R has a place to compete. People will argue the case that the increased displacement of the Twin is an unfair advantage, but there are restrictions in place to keep the playing field level. The rules are set-up so that Twins will be subjected to a 13 lb (6kg) weight penalty and the use of air restrictor plates which can increase or decrease the level of performance based on the results during the 2008 World Superbike season. If it's too dominant right out of the gate then the smaller restrictor plates will be used to level the playing field. Conversely, if they get spanked, then larger restrictor plates will open things up in an effort to close the gap on the In-Lines. Pay close attention in the upcoming months as to how this will all play out - it's sure to be intriguing.

As it is, the 1098R powerplant is a massaged version of the standard 1098 motor with titanium conrods, titanium valves, lighter crankshaft and a high-tech traction control system. Its oversquare 106mm x 67.9mm configuration is the result of a 2mm decreased bore and 3.2mm increased stroke compared to the standard 1098. Decreasing weight was a key element of the 1098R design and the effort to shave lbs paid off with a 4.9-lb (2.2kg) reduction versus the 1098 motor and 12.4 lbs (5.6kg) less than the previous generation 999R engine. All these lightened components add up to one fast-revving, hard-charging motor that is going to give the Fours a run for their money. Connecting corners on this Twin takes the Ducati riding experience to the next level. It comes on hard but thanks to the DTC it's actually quite easy to ride like a champion. Huge power wheelies through the first three gears and enough torque to pin your eyeballs back in your head are not always trademarks of Twin power, but it is with this bike.

After logging a grand total of two hours seat time during six 20-minute sessions on board the 1098R, one thing that really stands out is the usable power it makes through its 10,500 rpm redline. While the DTC makes the nearly 200 horsepower easy to access, the Evoluzione mill is still a rip-roaring ride like no Twin we've ever ridden before. To take advantage of the increased power output, third-, fourth- and sixth-gear ratios are higher than those on the standard or the S models, while a multi-plate dry slipper clutch helps keep ham-fisted downshifts in check. The test bikes we had at our disposal at Barber were also equipped with the Factory Race Kit that comes with all 2008 Ducati 1098Rs. The US-spec kit includes a full stainless steel/titanium Termignoni exhaust system with carbon fiber canisters (which has an MSRP of $3000 if purchased from your local Ducati dealer), air filter and reconfigured ECU that once installed, "initiates the dialogue that controls the traction control system." Ducati claims the fully kitted 1098R machines we tested produce 189 horsepower and 101 lb-ft of torque.

As rapidly as this bike approaches corners it's good that it is equipped with some of the best braking components in the business. Four-piston Brembo Monobloc calipers and massive 330mm disc brakes are an incredibly powerful combination on the track. We can go on and on about the level of feel, power and the sheer enjoyment of using them but let's be honest, unless your name is Bayliss or Russell you'll never tap into the potential these binders have. They'll still haul this bike down from 150 mph and allow for some serous trail braking antics for even a rider that don't possess world class riding skills. Lap after lap and turn after turn the confidence that the R inspires is what makes it such a blast to ride fast despite the exclusive MSRP.

Since the odds of getting a ride on one of these machines is slim we must take pleasure in the style the 1098R brings to the table. Its Ducati racing pedigree is evident in every aspect of this bike from the trellis frame, single-sided swingarm, sophisticated electronics package and wind-tunnel derived bodywork slathered in luscious red paint - all of which point to the undeniable fact that this is a pure race bike. The $39,995 price tag and a limit of 300 units on U.S. shores ensures that only the most serious riders will get to experience it, but there's no harm in dreaming about it. Whether the 1098R is worth 40-large is entirely up to you. But if you're looking to own the most unbelievable Ducati this side of a Desmosedici, then this is it.

If you wanted to know just how important the 696 Monster is to the future of Ducati you needed to look at the suits. The suits and the ties. Well, okay the suits, the ties - and the $300 haircuts.

There were three distinct groups gathered in Barcelona for the world launch of the all new Ducati Monster 696. At one end were the journos. Some looking like illegal immigrants trying to sneak into Spain, many sporting freebie clothing gifted by kind, or merely gullible, manufacturers - and a few smart, casual.

Then there were masses of Ducati employees - all sharp and trendy in Ducati corporate clothing - eyes darting, damp hands tense and truly hyped for the start of the big game. And finally, there were the suits and designer ties and immaculate haircuts of the real players. The Ducati financiers, representatives of the city of Barcelona and, incredibly, Ducati had even wheeled out the Italian Ambassador to Spain to speak, very convincingly as it happened, of the Bologna factory's sterling qualities.

All that we lacked was Luciano Pavarotti to sing the Ducati corporate anthem and there would have been a full hand of cards. Come to think of it, probably the ONLY reason Pavarotti wasn't there was because he is dead. Otherwise, Ducati would have certainly wheeled him out.

This was a major occasion - and Ducati wanted us journos to know it.

If you think that the future of Ducati lies in Casey Stoner winning MotoGP, or the next hyper performance bike on from the 1098R or even another batch of Desmosedicis you would be wrong. Completely and utterly misinformed. All these iconic motorcycles are the very blood and soul of Ducati - but the motorcycle which holds the key to the factory's future is the Monster.

In style and performance, the Monster 696 does exactly what it needs to do, give owners a beautiful machine that is also capable out on the weekend joy rides.
Consider these stats for a moment. Typically, Ducati produce around 30,000-35,000 motorcycles a year. This is a tiny, quantum mechanics small, number of motorcycles for a factory of Ducati's status and an amazing credit to the Bologna girls and boys.

Since its launch in 1993, Ducati have sold over 200,000 Monsters - a figure which dwarfs every other Ducati product. At one time, 60% of Ducati's production was Monsters. The new 696 is that important! Better still, the initial Monster was cheap and easy to build and has remained so during its long life. This is mainly good news for Ducati - but with just a touch of difficulty too.

When Ducati produces the 1598 RS-extra-plus-super, or whatever, its buyers will not only accept every new trick which Ducati can throw into the package but they will positively demand them. Suddenly, 180 hp will become the sort of power fit only for scooters or beginning riders on their first day of tuition. Now, real men will need 220 hp or whatever the magic number is for the 2012 riding season.

By contrast, Monster owners want to own a Monster. Technical specification is of far less importance than paying for, and getting, a Monster. In fact, Ducati's launch slogan of, "Full Stop - Fast Forward", was rather clever and summed the job up very nicely.

The new Monster is supposed to be the Armani/Diesel/Gucci/Prada of the bike world. A Ducati not only for the motorcyclist but also for the urban cool. The reason for this new fondness for fashion is obvious. There are an awful lot more potential customers for an urban fashion item than there are who want to sell their first-born child in order to own a Desmosedici.

Gabriele del Torchio, Ducati's CEO, actually made this point. There are Ducatisti and Monsteristi, he noted - and there may not even be much of a crossover between the two. The 30-year-old Marketing Manager, who skis, windsurfs and watches soccer might well add a Monster to his portfolio of toys whereas he will probably never go near a 1098.

The good news for us who are fat, bald, wrinkly, and therefore desperately uncool, but who really do like motorcycles, is that the 696 is actually an extremely fine motorcycle. For my part, if someone wants to buy a 696 as a fashion accessory and only ride it around town, then why not? They may well be missing out on much of what the bike has to offer, but you pays your money and you takes your choice.

So Ducati's problem was to produce a Monster for the 21st Century which looked, felt and performed like a Monster from the 20th Century - only more so. It was a harder task than one might imagine at first sight.

The overwhelming first impression of the new Monster is that it is a 100% pure, thoroughbred Monster. It's not an Aprilia Shiver or Yamaha MT01 or Triumph Speed Triple but totally and utterly Monster. It is also drop dead gorgeous. Although the 696 is the entry door to Ducati's world, with a retail selling price in the neighborhood of $8,500, it does not feel or look like a budget-priced special. On the contrary, it could be legitimately argued that the 696 is one of the most beautiful Ducatis since the 916 - and it is infinitely more attractive than the old Monster.

Although taste is very personal, I just loved the fluidity of the bike's lines with the gas tank oozing into the seat and then curving onwards to the rear cowling. The only element which grates is the gray bar which splits the headlamp horizontally. This looks like an afterthought and makes a stylistically extremely clean front end look untidy.

The launch colors were matte black, shiny black, red and a sort of metallic white, which Ducati calls Pearl. The red is stunning, closely followed by the metallic white. The shiny black is okay if you like black. Only ride the matte black 696 if you win one in a free-to-enter competition.

If you do win a 696, changing it to a decent color might not be that much of a problem. The gas tank is not really the tank at all but a quickly detachable cover covering the fuel cell and air box. Remove this, the front fender and rear seat cowl, and you can have an instant bike change. In fact, as we speak, Ducati is planning a range of accessories, including chrome bodywork, just so that owners can individualize their bikes.

Almost, but not all, of the bike gives an impression of quality. The trellis frame remains and this is bolted to an aluminum subframe from which the double-sided swingarm hangs. More of its performance in a moment but in terms of aesthetics it looks wonderful.

On some of the more twisty stretches of asphalt, I found myself wondering: what would be the ideal motorcycle for powering out of tight hairpins and down short straights? Even some of the 600 sportsbikes on those roads were looking a little unwieldy at times. I came to the conclusion it’d be a sporting single that’s light on weight and heavy on torque—something like the Roland Sands 450 SuperSingle or the Ducati Supermono Strada shown above. The original mid-90s Supermono was a limited-production design from Pierre Terblanche, with 80 hp pushing just 126 kg (277 lb). Only 67 of these machines were built, and the leading expert on them is Alistair Wager, who managed Ducati’s AMA Superbike team. Wager has now built a street-going replica—hence the ‘Strada’—using his unparalleled mechanical knowledge and access to the Ducati parts bin. The Supermono Strada uses much of the original engine, but with the addition of the Testastretta (“narrow head”) top-end from the 999. The English-built chassis is a replica of the original, but crafted from light chromoly 4130 steel. The swingarm is a 1000SS item, headlights are from the 749, and the starter is from a 916. Öhlins suspension, revised gear ratios and Brembo brakes help keep the power under control. Wager quotes a cost of around GBP35,000 to build this bike (US$56,000): a lot of money, yes, but undoubtedly a lot of fun too. Motorcycle Daily has the full story and specifications.

We’ve seen some strange alliances between motorcycle manufacturers over the years. And one of the most unusual involves MotoTrans, a little-known Spanish company based in Barcelona. MotoTrans built motorcycles between 1957 and 1983, when it was bought by Yamaha. Many of the bikes were badge-engineered Ducatis, built under licence and with small modifications; others were proprietary designs powered by Ducati engines. The most successful model was probably the Vento 350, the very last motorcycle to use the famous Ducati bevel single motor. Ducati itself stopped producing the bevel singles in 1974, but the engine continued to power the MotoTrans Vento until 1983. (The machine above is an original, unrestored ’82 model produced for the Japanese market, with a left-side gearlever.) The Vento was a popular bike in Spain, and would probably have sold well in Italy too—had Ducati permitted it. The four-stroke 340 cc single breathed through a Dell’Orto PHF 32 AS carburetor, and pumped out 28 bhp—ample for a bike weighing just 134 kg dry, and good for a top speed of around 160 km/h. Unfortunately, the Vento is hard to come by these days, and is surprisingly rare on the classic scene in Europe. Every few months, a vintage motorcycle comes along that literally stops me in my tracks—a machine so sculptural and beautiful, it would almost be criminal to subject it to the rigors of the open road. It happened three months ago when pre-release images of the French “CP Project #1″ Triton arrived in my inbox. And now it’s happened again with this 1974 Ducati 750 Sport. As so often happens with the internet, a few images of this bike were floating around, but without any clues to its provenance. I’m no Ducati expert, but the machine is obviously customized—and after a little investigation, it turns out that it’s a rare 1974 Ducati 750 Sport Desmo Special owned by Mike Cecchini of Maryland, USA, a well-known name in Ducati circles. His café racer took out the ‘Wild Card Judges Pick’ at the 2007 Ducati Superbike Concorso held at Laguna Seca, probably because there’s more to this bike than first meets the eye. The original Sport [see contemporary review] was based on the 750 GT, but with larger carburetors and high-compression cylinder heads and pistons. The upgrades reportedly sent an extra 8 hp to the rear wheel, and along with a reduced frontal area, made the Sport good for 200 km/h. Cecchini’s machine, however, is labelled a ‘Desmo Special’—so it looks like the engine is in an even higher state of tune, with a non-standard Desmo valve system for higher revs and even more power. Update from owner Mike Cecchini: I’m very pleased you like my 1974 Ducati Sport Desmo Special. I think you can tell I’ve put my heart and soul into this motorcycle. Frankly I never thought I would ever own a green motorcycle, but when I saw the paint color at a California car show, I knew it was the one for this bike. The Sport Desmo engine is something of great joy for me as I am a gearhead through and through. Not only is it rather nice to look at (now you can see why they are called “roundcase” motors) but it was also built to run as good as the bike looks, by one of the very best Ducati engine builders in North America, Guy Martin of MBP Ducati.

Pronounced “Gee”—he’s French Canadian—he’s a long-time friend and a well-respected Ducati engine builder in Montreal, Canada. When I approached Guy to work on the Sport Desmo project he was not initially interested in building any more bevel motors, as the numbers of them had dwindled to near nothing and they take an enormous amount of time to set-up properly and assemble compared to the new belt-driven Ducati motors. But after some arm twisting (and a few good dinners and bottles of wine) he agreed and promised to build an engine befitting the project.

To start with, Ducati roundcase GT and Sport motors use valve springs like most engines of the 70s and only the 750SS motors are spring-less, with desmodromics doing all the valve opening and closing work. In those days if one wanted to reach the rpms needed for competitive hp, there was little else that would allow a motor to rev and not have valves floating about. Therefore once Guy got into the project he wanted to pull out all the stops and not only do the 750SS desmo head conversion, but also his “TestaRossa” headwork on the Sport heads to bring them into the 21st century.

Over the winter of 2006 Guy built a very special engine using his 20+ years of experience in the Canadian aircraft industry as an engine and materials quality control inspector, along with his excellent Ducati engine building experience. So not only did the upper part of the engine get the full head flow and Desmo treatment, but the crank, connecting rods and pistons also were upgraded to the point where the engine was now able to go well past its previous 7500 rpm redline, to nearly 12,000 rpm—which Guy told me I had better not exceed. Doh! With this in mind, I set the engine redline at 10,500 and the motor has gone from its original 58 hp to just a tad over 80 rear wheel hp.

In conclusion, and as I read the comments left by some here, rest assured gentlemen that while this motorcycle gets the finest care and lives the good life in my shop, it’s actually being used as designed. #1: make any gearhead stop, pause and enjoy. But more importantly, #2: ride it as often as possible. So far it’s been ridden in anger at V.I.R. with the Mid-Atlantic Ducati Club and on the winding roads and rolling hills of Maryland … right where it belongs.

Every now and then, I get an email from a gentleman called Seth Dorfler, who is well known in US motorcycling circles. Dorfler presides over a seemingly inexhaustible archive of vintage motorcycle photographs, plus Ducati and Moto Guzzi memorabilia. (Much of this material was gathered from his days working for the Berliner Motor Corporation, one of the leading US motorcycle importers from the 1950s to the 1970s.) Seth invariably includes an unusual photo or two with his notes; after our recent feature on Don Castro’s Triumph, this Ducati dirt tracker landed in my inbox. The provenance of the round-case bike has been obscured by history. “I first saw the bike at a Motorcycle show in the 70s,” Dorfler recalls. “The bike was part of the Berliner/Premier Motor Corp. display at the Texas show—one of Berliner’s dealers arranged for it to be on the booth.” After a couple of days digging around, it looks like this lovely machine was built by Eddie Wilbanks—the “Wizard of Odds”—and campaigned in late 70s GNC-Dirt Track Nationals by Kenny McDonald (as #26) and then Steve Freeman (as #68). It looks just as cool today as it did then; is anyone out there inspired to make a streetable replica, perhaps using Ducati’s current 803 cc, 81 bhp Hypermotard motor?

René Waters is a Ducati aficionado who lives in Medicine Hat, Alberta, about 3 hours east of Calgary. He runs the website Ducati Meccanica, an essential resource for anyone owning, or thinking of owning, an old Ducati. As you might expect, René’s own motorcycle is something special. It’s a 1978 Ducati 900 GTS that has been heavily customized, but in the most sensitive way. I asked René to tell us the story, so here it is, in his own words.

I happened into an exotic sports car dealership in Lake Forest (northern upscale suburb of Chicago). Just looking; I couldn’t afford anything in there. But they had two 900 SS Ducatis sitting there, making the cars look good. One silver, one black. They were beautiful, but just as out of reach as the cars were to a young guy. But those two bikes never left my mind: here was what happened when Italians built café-style bikes … perfection!

Over the years I customized a succession of Japanese bikes, every one trying to capture (and failing) what I’d seen in that sports car dealership. Eventually, about 12 years ago, my wife flat out told me that if I wanted a Ducati that badly, I’d better go find one. And so the hunt began in those pre-internet, pre-eBay days, and I tracked one down to the back of a liquor store in Calgary, Alberta. It was in a very sorry condition. I bought it on the spot, even though it wasn’t the bike I remembered from 20 years before—a GTS model, not an SS. But I knew it could be made into the bike that had haunted me for all that time.

This is its second resurrection in my hands. Once ten years ago, and this latest iteration, completed last year. I acquired the remains of a 2006 Paul Smart Replica that had been pretty picked over before I got it. I wanted the wheels most, and what happened next was the consequence of trying to make them work. Shoehorning a 180-series rear wheel into a swing arm designed for a 110 is no mean feat!

Once I had it down to the bare frame, the “might-as-wells” took over, and I started changing and upgrading everything. I ended up cutting off all the stock mounting points and building new ones to position things where I wanted them. I had to build a new rear frame loop to accommodate and mount a larger rear fender for the big rear wheel, and to fit the new solo seat. The front end was relatively easy. I changed out the Sport Classic steering stem for the one I was using already, and custom fabricated an adapter for head tension—as no bearings were available that would work with the new stem and existing head stock. New stops had to be fabricated to keep the upside down forks from hitting the 1972 GT steel tank. The seat is a repro of the original 750/900 SS solo seat, as are the side covers. Original Conti exhausts were sourced, and custom hangers fabricated which also position the custom rearsets. I replaced all the electrics with a custom harness and a bank of relays under the tank, running modern electronic ignition, fuses, lighting and instruments.

For the last ten years, the bike has been my daily rider. Weather permitting: I live in Canada, so winter is rough for motorcycling (call me a wimp). The shakedown ride was a 3,700 km round trip to Bonneville for the BUB Speed Trials and the vintage races at Miller Motorsport Park, Salt Lake, last September. The bike has approximately 180,000 miles on it, with two motor rebuilds that I’ve done. Possibly another before I got it. I plan on riding it plenty more.

I will be moving the horns from under the headlight to a less conspicuous spot behind the regulator rectifier, and I want to fix the angle of the rear tail light—I don’t like the way it points slightly downwards. So that’s the next job.

It’s now the bike I’ve always wanted, classic Ducati café good looks, fantastic bevel motor, and completely modern running gear: my take on what the new Ducati Sport Classic might have been. The redesign/rebuild took four months from teardown to first ride, and here’s a list of the mods in no particular order. All the work (with the exception of the powder coating and painting) was done by myself and a very good friend in his garage. There was no other outside work.

  • Extensive swing arm modifications to fit the 180 rear wheel and accommodate new 2″ longer shocks
  • All the existing frame mounting points were removed and new ones fabricated for tank, seat, side covers, battery box, ignition box, coils, regulator rectifier, rear frame loop, rear fender mounts, swing arm shock mounting points, exhaust hanger/rear set mounts, steering stops, choke mount, and inner fender mounts
  • Rear frame loop cut off and replaced with one to accommodate rear fender mounting and solo seat.
  • Custom fabricated steering stem and bronze bushings to enable Ducati Sport Classic triples to fit the existing steering head, with sealed roller bearings.
  • Upside down fully adjustable Showa forks, with Ohlins cartridge UES upgrade kit (which I have not yet installed)
  • Instruments are new S4 Monster, electronic speedo sensor mounted in the rear caliper mount under swing arm
  • Rear fender, 2008 Ducati 1000 GT, 1981 Darmah inner rear fender, 08 Sport Classic front fender
  • Turn signals (front and rear), tail light, tail light bracket, and headlight bracket new (Sport Classic)
  • New genuine Conti mufflers from Pescara, Italy
  • New rear shocks, 2009 Sport Classic 1000 S, with Ohlins valve kit
  • Battery box new from Ducati (2009 Sport Classic)
  • Reproduction solo seat, custom upholstering
  • Frame, swing arm, and center stand powder coated
  • Complete re-paint: front fender, rear fender, seat, tank, side covers, headlight bucket
  • Reproduction decals (made by myself)
  • Seat and panels fastened with Dzus fasteners
  • Wiring harness replaced with new custom built harness. All electrics now run on a bank relays under the tank
  • Old ceramic-type fuse block replaced with modern inline automotive style fuse block
  • Modern (new) coils, plug caps and plugs
  • Regulator rectifier replaced and moved to front, under tank, for improved cooling
  • Older style Ducati Monster switchgear
  • Reverse cone K&N filters to replicate velocity stacks (can’t run with open bell mouths as it’s a desert here during the summer)
  • Master cylinders, calipers and controls: all Brembo
  • Bike converted from rear drum brake to disc with Brembo master cylinder, caliper, and rotor and stainless steel line
  • Rear caliper custom mounted under swing arm
  • Sprocket carrier machined down, and spacers fabricated to have the sprockets line up and rear wheel to center properly
  • 520 chain and rear sprocket, front sprocket machined to 520 and shouldered spacer fabricated to ensure correct chain alignment and output shaft engagement. Not enough room for a 530 (original) chain.
  • Bar risers (2005 ST3 Ducati)
  • Custom billet aluminum bars
  • Replaced cylinders and installed new high comp pistons and rings
  • Installed a MotoWitt DMC2 programmable electronic ignition system (16 programmable advance curves)
  • Replaced main crank bearings, re-shimmed, crank and transmission
  • Custom fabricated hydraulic clutch conversion, Brembo master cylinder and controls
  • Rebuilt gear selector shift box
  • Custom fabricated rear sets and control linkages
  • Michelin Pilot Classic 17″ tires front and rear
  • Both Dell’Orto carbs refurbished and rebuilt
  • Dry cell type battery fitted
  • CRG bar end mirrors
  • All fasteners (nuts, bolts, washers, etc) replaced with stainless steel throughout.

One of the strangest stories from World War II is that of the Flying Tigers—the nickname for three fighter squadrons of US volunteers that flew for the Chinese Air Force. They’re best known today for the shark face nose art that decorated their planes, and that’s the inspiration for this Ducati custom. ‘Bite‘ is the latest work from London artist Death Spray Custom, and it’s apparently a Ducati ‘1026’. There are no mechanical details available, so I’m wondering if the engine is a 996 that’s been upgraded with Fast By Ferracci’s 1026 Stroker Kit. The paint effect is clearly amazing though—and guaranteed to give drivers palpitations if approaching fast in the rear view mirror. [Images © Neil Bridge.]

We’ve had some pretty rich fare on Bike EXIF of late. So here’s something a little lighter—the sort of bike that’s within the reach of most pockets and a reasonably proficient backyard mechanic. ‘Bobcati’ is a 1981 Ducati Darmah owned by the motorcycle writer Tod Rafferty. “You don’t see many Ducati bobbers,” he told us, “which seemed a good reason to do one.” The Darmah 900SD was an aircooled twin with the famous desmodromic valve system; it was a slightly detuned ‘touring’ version of Ducati’s range-topping 900SS. Thirty years on, the looks of the standard Darmah haven’t aged as well as many other motorcycles designed in the 70s, but Tod’s cosmetic changes have made a big difference. The front fender is from a Ducati Indiana, the rear fender is from a Suzuki motocross bike, the headlight hangers are from a Ducati 750 GT, and the turn signals are from J.C. Whitney. The pigskin-covered seat is “from a guy in Maryland who has them made in China.” The Darmah always had great handling, but Tod has upped the ante even further with new shocks and fork springs from Progressive. “Of all the Ducatis I’ve owned (8) or ridden (many) over the years as a motojournalist, ole Bob remains my favorite,” says Tod. “I do get a few sneers and head-shakes from the posers and purists … always good for a chuckle.”

The big bore Desmo 90° L-Twin produces 180 hp in standard mode and 186 hp when using the race kit (“intended strictly for track use only”, Ducati says). You also get a Termignoni racing exhaust system with carbon fibre mufflers and a rear paddock stand. The gearbox has a very high ratio 6th gear, “fully enabling the speed increase achieved from additional performance modifications (suggested for track use only).” But the highlight for me is visual—the gorgeous fuel tank. Weighing 1kg (2.2lb) less than the stock tank, it also boosts capacity by 2.5 litres to 18 litres (4.75 US gal). And it’s brush-finished and clear-coated to maintain a factory team look. Molto bella.

After a recent run of retro-themed bikes, I’ve been waiting for a contemporary machine to catch my eye. And finally, Ducati has delivered the goods with a 2010 model that will probably be regarded as an all-time classic in 2030. The $39,995 1198 R Corse is a special edition of the 1198, with mostly cosmetic changes. A couple of months ago we showed the Ducati 900 GTS custom built by René Waters, a Canadian Ducati aficionado who runs the website Ducati Meccanica. That bike was hugely popular with readers, and now René has built another 900 GTS—this time a cafe racer for his wife Sue. Here’s the story, once again in René’s own words.

This café racer started life as a 1978 900GTS, a pretty staid tourer much denigrated by Ducati enthusiasts and reporters at the time. Mostly it was the general poor finish typical of Italian bikes of the era, and the ‘standard’ styling of the bike. People were used to the road-ready race bikes that Ducati built, and felt let down by the GT/GTS range. The bikes themselves were, and are, very good machines, but were panned for their looks.

Therefore when I acquired this one, for my wife Sue, we set about improving those looks. When I asked her what she wanted to do with it she immediately replied that she wanted to “make a classic Italian café racer … turn it into an SS for me.”

The first thing to go was the bodywork. So off came the tank, seat and side covers—particularly ugly—and both fenders. Although these were stainless steel, they just didn’t have the right look, being too heavy and pedestrian. The tank was replaced with a steel one from a ’78 SS, and brackets had to be fabricated to fit it to the GTS frame mounting points.

The side covers were replaced with fiberglass replica SS ones made for me from molds of the originals. I used the existing frame mounts and drilled the holes in the side covers to suit. I found an original dual seat for a ’78, but wanted to be able to use both dual and solo seats. (When you bought an SS new in 1978 you got both.) The solo seat in the pictures is a reproduction picked up on eBay.

The fenders were replaced with reproduction SS units, and a NOS original early-style CEV tail light and bracket fitted. Next came the fairing, sourced from Phil Hitchcock at Road & Race Ducati in Australia—an invaluable source for anyone with a bevel Ducati. I also got an original 900SS five light dash unit from him, and an original ’74-’76 rear fairing mount.

Original lights for the dash are as rare as hens’ teeth. There is a company in Holland that has reproduction ones—but at something like $350 for a set of five, it seemed a bit extravagant just for idiot lights. So I sourced some LEDs and fabricated my own; while not original, they match the gauges quite well and best of all, they work. An original Marchal headlamp—a period upgrade for the lighting—came up on eBay and I couldn’t resist. Probably paid too much for it but it’s cool and collectable in its own right, and it just looks great with the Marchal cool cat logo!

The standard bars of course would never work with the fairing fitted (as if the bike wasn’t going to have clip-ons anyway). I had a set of race clip-ons but decided I wanted an adjustable set. I settled on adjustable Tomaselli clip-ons; beautifully made and with infinite adjustment, so they can be tuned to your riding position instead of the other way round. Very nice and well worth it. I also welded lugs to the frame, and installed folding Tarozzi pegs and levers.

The 32mm Dell’Orto pumper carbs got a refurbishment and rebuild, and I managed to find a modern replacement for the original air filters. The original LaFranconi silencers were particularly ugly and had to go. The only real option for replacements were Contis: the sound is unmistakable and incredible. The ones on the bike are original from 1978, but have been repaired and re-chromed … several times.

The original GTS had 40-spoke Radaelli Italian ‘chrome’ steel rims that were mostly rust when we got the bike. These were replaced with flanged aluminum Borrani rims from a Moto Guzzi dealership that was selling off all its old bits and had a shed full of discarded rims They were nice enough to look through them all and send me the best two. The front rim is identical to the ones used by Ducati on the SS, with the exception of the part number stamping. The rear had to have the spoke holes re-angled to suit the Ducati hub, because Moto Guzzis have shaft drive and subsequently a much larger rear hub.

All the cables were replaced and a new Surflex clutch installed. The new springs proved too much for Sue to pull, if the truth be known, the clutch was uncomfortably heavy for me too—so I can image how she felt. I took out two of the springs (leaving four), which lightened the pull to civilized levels, and took the bike out for a good caning. Low and behold nothing I did made it slip. So it will run this way, with a nice light clutch pull until it starts to slip, at which time I will pull two of the springs and replace them with the two new ‘spares’. Once it begins to to slip again I’ll add the full complement of springs. I figure there’s about 10 or 15 years of riding there before she’ll need new springs.

I researched the original Ducati 900SS silver and blue paint colours and had a local guy here paint everything. The finishing touch was the gear-gazer rear cylinder bevel cover window … you can see the cam drive bevel gears working away. With 15-tooth front and 36-tooth rear sprockets, this 900 GTS has top speed of 127mph (204kph). Ducati claimed 121 mph for a new GTS in 1978, but I think that may have been a bit optimistic!

Despite all the expensive machinery we occasionally feature here, there’s something to be said for a back-to-the-basics classic built on a shoestring budget. And Peter Koren’s Ducati ‘XR900′ is a great example. In 2003, Koren stumbled across an abandoned Ducati 900 GTS project in the UK. The bike was a non-runner and Koren bought it to cannibalize for his 750GT and 900SS. But the GTS turned out to be mechanically sound, so he left it intact in his garage for a couple of years. After mulling over his options, he decided to turn it into a flat tracker. “One weekend while my father was staying I made a mock-up XR750 tank and seat out of Cellotex, a polyurethane insulation foam that is really fast to work,” says Koren. “Dad sat in the sun drawing the tank graphics and my son helped paint. I liked the result and decided to proceed with certain parameters: I would try to build it as if it came out of the Ducati factory—which would determine many of the details—and the budget was set at £500 (US$720) plus tires and chain. The budget was low because it would always be a bitsa and also because of fear of failure: I wasn’t sure it was going to work, and I’ve seen plenty of modified bevels that make me shudder.”

Koren bought a replica seat base and handlebars from the USA and made a wooden buck for the tank. “I had a sheet of aluminum, made a sand bag and cut down one of the kids’ croquet mallets and started bashing. Then I had to learn how to gas weld aluminum, which was tricky, and weld up the bits.” After making side panels and straightening out kinks in the frame tubes, Koren steepened the steering angle by five degrees to get the look of the XR900 just right. Next came the exhaust: “I had loads of old headers to cut up, but found I needed a tighter bend under the front cylinder and eventually found a grab handle as used in toilets for the disabled. (For the record, I did not steal one!) The silencers have cutouts for the rear shock—like the Imola high-level pipes—so they sit nice and close to the frame.” The speedo and tacho housings are in the style of Scrambler ‘Beer cans’, which meant compromise on the handlebars and switches, even though the wiring is run through the bars. “I wheeled it out of the garage, put in some fuel, and kicked it over a few times with ignition off to get fuel in the cylinders,” says Koren, “and it started first kick. Brilliant reward after three years, and the cheap far-eastern silencers sound amazing with a really deep thump.” [Via DucCutters and Eurobike Maine. More pictures on Peter Koren's Flickr page.]
